Houston METRO
Black(local)    Houston      Black USA
All statistics above are from the Census Bureau - 2007 American Community Survey
Houston has the 9th largest Black population of any metropolitan area in the nation. It is approaching the 1 millionth mark. The only other metro close is Dallas-Fort Worth with has 80,000 less Black residents. Houston’s Black population growth is attributed to its robust economy, low cost of living, and favorable environment for diversity especially for African Americans.

Houston enjoys a good mix of Black migrants from neighboring states as well as college educated African Americans from coast to coast who want to take advantage of the cities opportunities without having to sacrifice a rich Black culture.

The Black Houston population recently received a big boost in 2005 as an unfortunate result of Hurricane Katrina. It is estimated that almost 100,000 Katrina victims still live there. Large percentages are poor and live in the cities southwest section. The majority being from New Orleans have changed the Houstons culture for good.
